Talking on speakerphone with your office door open

Don’t fucking do it. I work at a place where I used to have an office. The upper management decided it would be a good idea to have an open layout. Well, it fucking sucks. It has been like this for 2 years now. Everyone who is in a cube hates it. Folks that have an office are indifferent. What really sucks is that my boss only uses his phone on speaker. He never picks up the handset. Sometimes he puts his cell phone on speaker and lays it on the desk and talks. The entire time he is practically yelling. I get up from my desk regularly and I close his door. He doesn’t mind but after I close it 3 or 4 times in one day I refuse to close it again.

This shit pisses me off to no end because he has a door he can close; I do not.  If you read this, and you have an office, please close your door if you are going to talk on speaker…or just pick up the fucking handset.

When people do this, they come off as if they don’t care about other people. If you are a boss, you shouldn’t do this.

So, now I have to take my laptop and move into an empty conference room just to concentrate and attempt to get work done.

Anyone that thinks an open office layout is a good idea should be shot. It is fucking awful and since my place of work decided to do this everyone is less productive. In fact, many people left to go to another job and more folks (myself included) want to leave.

An open layout can take a job that you really love and turn it into a job that you hate. This is what has happened to me and my job.

I could have written this myself. At this very moment, two people are huddled in a cube behind me, participating in a conference call on speakerphone. They’ve been on for over an hour. Conference rooms are available, but why bother with courtesy, I guess. What I want to know is, how did these people get a speakerphone in the first place. My phone is a regular desk model from the 1990s that has the Lucent logo where the message waiting light is supposed to be.
